Increasing dependence on computers for storing and processing data has also resulted in exposing important data to threats from inside and outside the organization. Though things like natural disasters and data thefts are not very common and at the same time are simply beyond prediction and control, security measures can definitely be employed for checking data loss occurring through other means. Here we’ve listed various causes of data loss which can at best be prevented to a large extent if not eliminated completely.
Causes:
§ Hardware malfunctions including hard drive crash and failure. If you hear your computer making scraping or scratching sound, that means your hard drive is having a hard time and may eventually fail to work. Other hardware corruption types include corrupted chip, corrupted magnetic head, corrupted disc, scratched disc, motor failure etc.
§ Software malfunctions that are responsible for data loss include software corruption, application malfunctions, virus or Trojan infection etc.
§ Reasons other than software and hardware corruption could be power disruption, human error in operations, accidental deletion of data, sudden shutdown, not heeding help or error messages displayed in case any thing goes out of place.
Symptoms:
- Computers making strange grinding sounds
- System hanging repeatedly
- Slowdown of system and applications
- Error messages and alerts generated by computer
- Data missing or lost from some or all files
- Files not opening or closing
- Application shuts down automatically
